Our People
OUR VISION IS TO CREATE AN INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT, INCLUSION AND WELLBEING.
Recruitment
PROVIDING THE BEST EXPERIENCE FOR NEW TALENT WANTING TO ENTER THE RAIL INDUSTRY
We work closely with local authorities, charitable organisations and key stakeholders to provide opportunities for local employment and for those who are looking to pursue or change to a career in rail, and we are proud to provide them with that chance.
Development
DEVELOPING OUR PEOPLE TO REACH THEIR FULL CAREER POTENTIAL
To embrace the changing world of work, we encourage those individuals looking to further their careers in the rail industry to make full use of the services of our in-house safety training provider, Infrastructure Training Services, and the training and development programmes offered by the Cleshar Academy, which include part-time university courses and industry charterships.
Wellbeing
HELPING OUR PEOPLE TO LEAD THE LIFE THEY WANT
We believe in creating an environment that allows our people not only to enjoy work but also to find peace of mind at the end of their working day. We work in partnership with Care first, which offers an anonymous 24/7 support service to anyone wishing to share any workplace or personal concerns, and our intranet provides information to help with our people’s mental health and wellbeing and advice on maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Cleshar in the local community
WE ARE COMMITTED TO GENERATING POSITIVE AND LASTING CHANGE TO COMMUNITIES FOUNDED ON MUTUAL TRUST AND RESPECT.
SCHOOLS
Cleshar is proud to be the main sponsor and partner of Transport for London’s Innovate programme for the sixth consecutive year. The programme promotes transport as a future career choice for young students, with over 60 schools, colleges and youth groups signed up to taking part.
COMMUNITY
We are keen supporters of youth sports and sponsor two youth football clubs, two rugby clubs and a women’s cricket team. Our sponsorship helps to fund half term school football programmes, enabling engagement with a wider variety of players and of different ages and ability, as well as the purchase of new kit and equipment.
ENVIRONMENT
As part of our commitment to the London Biodiversity Action Plan, and in collaboration with London Underground, we continue to protect trackside wildlife by installing bird nesting and bat breeding boxes across the network. We also create log stacks and brush piles from our vegetation maintenance works as habitat for small mammals and invertebrates.
Sustainability at Cleshar
SUSTAINABILITY COMPRISES THREE MUTUALLY SUPPORTING ELEMENTS – ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND SOCIAL – AND OUR STRATEGY IS AIMED AT STRENGTHENING OUR CONTRIBUTION TO EACH IN EQUAL MEASURE.
Sustainability
Economic Sustainability
We are committed to delivering an efficient and dependable rail infrastructure to improve people’s lives.
Our work brings us into contact with multiple and diverse communities and, as a responsible contractor, our focus is on boosting the local economies in which we operate and on leaving a positive and lasting legacy.
We believe that our greatest investment in these communities is in engaging with the local small to medium sized enterprises, suppliers and workforce and offering educational and training opportunities within our field of expertise to young and underrepresented people, bringing mutual benefit for everyone.
Sustainability
Environmental Sustainability
We have a strong in-house HSQE team with a dedicated sustainability lead who ensures our works are delivered without causing environmental degradation or pollution and with consideration of the location, scope, duration, and seasonal timing of the works. We maintain a high level of environmental awareness among our staff through appropriate training and hands-on practical experience, and apply innovative thinking to achieve better environmental outcomes, such as responsible procurement, greater reuse and recycling of materials, and use of low carbon alternatives.Sustainability
Social Sustainability
In our drive to contribute positively to society, we develop strong relationships with our clients and the industry bodies associated with our business operations and our projects, taking time to understand their needs and aspirations. We are committed to Transport for London’s Strategic Labour Needs and Training (SLNT) agenda, which influences our approach to recruitment and skills training on all our contracts.
We collaborate with clients, local authorities, communities, residents and other stakeholders to align our social value strategy with theirs, always ensuring that our contributions produce meaningful outcomes and long-term benefits. We work with charities and identify how we can best help them, be that our time, skills or materials.
Led by our Social Value Manager, we use the Thrive social value platform to independently record and verify the social value of our activities, based on ISO 26000 guidance and the themes and metrics presented in the Government’s Social Value Model.
