West India Quay Canopy Replacements

Project Overview

As the area around Docklands has continued to grow with the construction of high rise structures, the microclimate in the area has changed causing significant increased wind loads on the station canopy at West India Quay.

Cleshar were contracted to Design and Build a replacement canopy that would be able to withstand high velocity winds which are channelled between the buildings and across the open water of the dock below the station.

The existing canopy was replaced by a modern robust glass structure to provide passengers with covered protection.

Scope of work

  • Erection of crash deck protection

  • Removal of the existing glazing system

  • Removal of the existing steel structure

  • Installation of the Planar Sentryglas plus glazing system

Safe Systems of Work were put in place to minimise the risk to both travelling public and site operatives, to ensure that there was no disruption to The Docklands Light Railway Services which were kept fully operational throughout the duration of the project.

Cleshar made every effort to reduce environmentally damaging emissions and waste. Over 90% of the material removed from the canopy will be recycled.

Benefits / Project Outcome

The project was concluded ahead of time and within the agreed budget. The improved robust canopy replacement ensured a new safety critical asset was in place to protect the operational line and station users.
