Rochford Footbridge Refurbishment

Rochford Railway Station is located just four miles north of Southend-on-Sea on the west side of the town centre. The station is a two-platform category C2 station with an open footbridge linking the two platforms. This section of the rail network is electrified with overhead lines. The station lies within the Rochford Conservation Area (Zone 2) with commercial and residential premises within 50m of the station car park.

The existing footbridge at Rochford Station was identified as requiring extensive repairs. The key defects identified, were paint loss and surface corrosion on the underside of the main span and some structural and surface repairs for example, section loss up to 0.5mm to the bottom flange of the main girders and to the plan bracings at the underside of the deck, particularly at the curved haunched sections near the supports.


The footbridge at Rochford Station is a single span structure providing pedestrian access between two platforms over two overhead electrified tracks. The span is square and the clear span between supports is approximately 11.6m.


Following a platform inspection report by MLM in April 2017 by the client at F001 stage, further repair or replacement works were identified along the lengths of trestle platform construction at the station, in particular, defective copers.

Cleshar’s Scope of Work

Cleshar was appointed as principal contractor in January 2018 by Abellio Greater Anglia.


Bridge refurbishment works were undertaken over five 52 hour weekend possession closures and six weeks during daytime hours. The station remained operational at all times during the works.


Temporary welfare facilities and delivery of materials are via the NR compound at the end of the station car park.

  • Short closure of the bridge and redirection of the public

  • Set up of platform hoarding and barriers so to allow daytime working

  • Erection of a bridge scaffold over the track during weekend closures

  • Carry out full grit blasting/hydroblasting to the whole structure in accordance with BS EN ISO 8501-1

  • Apply protective coating to NR standard

  • Install web repair plates and stiffener plates to the severely corroded section crosshead steel beams above the cast iron columns at support trestles

  • Install new channels bolted to web of existing crosshead steel beams and within the flanges to enhance bearing width due to section loss

  • Install new bottom plate to the bottom flanges of both wrought iron staircase

  • Replace severely corroded stain angle cleats

  • Repair cracked staircase concrete toe foundation

  • Paint testing (for presence of lead) prior to site works commencing

  • Following grit blasting, carry our detailed inspection to ensure no additional defects are uncovered following removal of the paintwork/corrosion as well as to confirm the exact size and locations for any required plate repairs – carry out condition survey to finalise and agree the repair scope

  • Install stair parapet railings on top of original stair girders as well as stringer and strengthening plate to bottom of stair girders

  • Wire mesh panels on stair lattices with double hand railing upgrades

  • Replace stair and landing timbers with GRP sections

  • Addition of supporting steelwork members for GRP stair landing deck, including channel bolted between UB crossheads

  • Addition of traverse bracing angle to underside at each end of the footbridge between beam bottom flanges at the bearing area

  • Replace corrugated sheeting

  • Installation of new GRP anti slip stair nosings and deck flooring

  • Replacement of lighting and containment.
