Richmond Train Arrestors

Project at a glance:

  • Responsible for upgrading track and infrastructure across four platforms

  • Extremely tight schedule, with all works completed over four weekends

  • Design successfully accelerated as a result

With planned new rolling stock and a proposed improved passenger timetable, Network Rail required an upgrade of the track and infrastructure at platforms 4-7 of the Transport for London-run Richmond Station. We were awarded the design and build project.

Under our Network Rail-endorsed principal contractor license, the scheme was designed, planned and successfully delivered within four weekends.

As well as re-railing and re-ballasting the platform track approaches, significant structural improvements were made to two bridges and platform signalling. Alongside the introduction of new, safer train arrestor buffer systems, the platforms themselves were altered with improvements to the lighting and cabling.

This project presented a number of challenges from the start: implementation of the works was scheduled over five possession weekends, but this was ultimately reduced to four. No other possessions were available to implement the works.

The Form A design provided by the client had not been signed and a combined Form A / Form B design had to be produced by the designers of the permanent way, which added to the challenge of accelerating the design. Design was successfully accelerated to achieve Approval For Construction (AFC) status on time in order to ensure the works were carried out on the possession weekends. Had the design not achieved AFC prior to implementation stage, it would have been necessary to cancel the project works.

Furthermore, delivery of the actual renewal works required careful planning due to the restrictions of single entry working (Richmond platforms 4 to 7 are termini) as well as the permanent way and signalling interface. This was carefully managed by our team through regular progress meetings and programme reviews as well as a lessons learnt following each possession to ensure delivery continued to improve week on week.
