Neasdon Depot Heavy Duty Maintenance Facilities

The Heavy Maintenance Facilities (HMF) Project formed part of the Four Lines Modernisation (4LM) programme. The Facilities were designed for the purpose of enabling overhaul works for the new fleet of S – stock trains. Planned future maintenance requirements included HVAC units, Door Overhaul, Gangway and Coupler Overhaul.

  • Demolition and replacement of Halfway Area Slab with reinforced concrete, inspection chambers and running rail infill and provision for train arrestors

  • Infill of Rds. 27, 28 & 29 at the Southern End of the shed with lightweight aggregate & a reinforced concrete capping slab

  • Blocking up existing door openings

  • Extension of drainage gullies and inspection pits

Innovations

Cleshar employed Leca® LWA instead of more traditional, less sustainable backfill materials. Leca® (Lightweight Aggregate Expanded Clay) is created by transforming 1m3 of freshly dug clay into 5m3 of lightweight expanded clay aggregate construction material. By combining the All-in-One features such as being durable, strong, lightweight, water absorbent and recyclable, Leca® LWA benefits the environment, limiting resource requirements and improving our living and working conditions.

 

We also used newly trialled standard solution reinforcement materials for movement joints within the capping slabs. These allowed for construction/movement joints to be pre-made through our supply chain therefore reducing durations required for site installation and inspection.
