Turkey Street Station Stairway Replacement
Cleshar were responsible for replacing 2no end of life staircases with new steel frame structures and GRP staircases.
Cleshar acted as Principal Contractor for the Design and Build of the staircases and surrounding premises and electrical works.
Scope of the works
Removal and replacement of 2no staircases over a weekend closure utilising a crane positioned at Street level
Removal of existing staircase render and replacement with new waterproof membrane and render
Replacement of handrails with new DDA compliant handrails
Installation of new surface water drainage
Replacement of tactile grids
The client required the structure to be designed and built within a quick timeframe, as the existing staircase was life expired, and the TOCs were receiving complaints regarding the condition and water ingress.
LO looked to Cleshar to provide innovative measures to achieve the project goal. The following innovations were implemented to enable this:
Engineering and design solutions around the new structure and existing station wall support. Cleshar designed so minimal loading was applied to existing walls
Early engagement of scheme designers and suppliers, prior to finalisation of the full scope
Expediated traffic management, ground testing and temporary works planning for crane lifts
Encouraging ‘flat management’ by all parties allowed LO, Arriva & Cleshar quick and effective decision making
Successful use of night-time working in the weeks prior to the possession, to enable both staircases to be completed over one weekend closure. The original plan was to utilise two weekend closures to install staircases on separate weekends. As works were being meticulously planned, it became apparent that a hybrid of night-time working and use of one possession, would ultimately offer better value for the client. Cleshar successfully completed these works using just one closure.

This was achieved with no impacts on station operations.
