Manningtree Station Lift Shafts

As part of the Abellio Greater Anglia station improvement programme, Cleshar delivered the design and build of two new lifts, providing step free access to two island platforms at Manningtree Station. The lift units were provided by an equipment manufacturer, as a multi-discipline project the scheme covered the necessary integration and delivery of the Civil, M&E, prefabrication and installation of the lift shafts and associated structures.


Alongside our design partner Pell Frischmann we undertook the initial design based on the Abellio Greater Anglia requirements, performance specifications, Network Rail standards and concept drawings provided by the customer’s own designers. The team undertook the review and appraisal of the AGA design, conducted intrusive surveys, and liaised with the customer throughout to ensure formal approval of the Form 001 design principal.


With the works being undertaken on the existing platforms track monitoring was carried out in line with the AMP process throughout the excavation stage of the project due to the close proximity to the open tracks. Enabling works were carried out to remove and relocate existing drainage, M&E duct systems, CCTV, PA and lighting services serving the subway stair canopies, subway and platforms.


A new electric sub main supply and LV distribution equipment was supplied for the lift motor rooms and lift power supplies. Other M&E works included new CCTV and lighting to the subway stair canopies, subway and for the lift structures and shafts.


Throughout the design and construction Pell Frischmann provided invaluable experience and knowledge, which together with the construction team experience gained on previous contracts ensured we achieved best results in both construction methodology and the design documentation.


Continuous on site reviews ensured the construction and installation met and complied with the design intent and recorded as part of the project inspection test plans.


Fundamental to the success of the project was the need to maintain the functional operation of the station. Again, as part of the design and planning process, the design, construction and customer teams ensured this was agreed, organised, reviewed and maintained throughout the project, with minimal impact to the travelling public.
