Seven Sisters Arches Refurbishment

Cleshar were chosen as the Principal Designer and Contractor to complete both Enabling and Temporary Works.

Our Infrastructure Team undertook Planned Preventive Maintenance Inspections at Seven Sisters Station. This identified that brickwork in 14 arches required immediate attention. Some sections showed severe deterioration (i.e., spalling, or missing bricks).

The pointing between brick courses had been washed away, which had left parts of soffits, spandrels, and abutments at risk of structural failure if not addressed.

Scope of works
  • Site setup in accordance with CDM Regulations

  • Refurbishments as recommended by the CCS Engineering Support Team.

  • The undertaking of inspections. Bespoke specifications developed to address issues at each arch section.

  • The requirements for Enabling and Temporary Work were established and the CCS Project Team were advised to have prior arrangements in place before attending the site.

Contract Start and Completion

January 2021 - March 2021

The CCS Inspection Team encountered dead Japanese Knot Weeds at several locations, especially around embankments. Despite confirmation of non-active JKW, extra care and planning were required to mitigate the risk.

The uneven ground surface inside the arch section required levelling and compaction before a scaffold tower and other access equipment could be erected. To achieve a smooth brick profile finish, Network Rail standard brick arch support details required implementation.

The client cleared site vegetation. This allowed CCS to setup the site and secure areas around JKW by putting protective coverings on identified sections. The areas were marked as exclusion zones and operatives were advised to keep away.

Access routes were demarcated for each arch with temporary staircases provided. This safe system of work allowed the operational team to deliver works within a safe environment.

Benfits / Project Outcome

CCS completed the remedial works to the highest possible standard. The client’s representative who attended during the construction phase praised the quality of the work carried out and signed it off without hesitation.

This scheme has significantly improved the life span of this very important railway infrastructure. The unique experience of delivering this project has expanded the capabilities of the operational team who are now more willing and able to take on comparably challenging work.
